Chapter 4

We face the chicken of death

I soon realized it wasn’t Morgoth, but it looked an awful lot like him. She was a girl, with two back legs, no front legs, ragged purple wings, red eyes, and ebony black scales. I also noticed an emerald green dragon with emerald wings and antennae (who smelled like pine needles and strawberries) behind her.

“AAAAAAAAAA!” the green dragon yelped, flinging his wings over his eyes.

“Oh, chill.” the Morgoth-like dragon said, thumping the other dragon with one wing, and nearly over-balancing and falling.

“Who are you? Why do you look like Morgoth?” Sam asked, pulling back the string on his bow.

“I have no idea why I look like this! Just two nights ago, I had this dream with a spooky black dragon, who said my name was Malca and I needed to come to him. Then I woke up looking like this! Befuddling! Anyway, my name is Willow, or Malca, according to my dream; and that's Birch!” she rambled, flinging her wing out in the direction of the green dragon.

“Aah,” Sam said, realization dawning in his eyes. “You must be Sparky's sister!” he exclaimed.

“Who?” Willow/Malca said. We hurriedly explained the whole story to Malca and Birch.

“Ooooooh, I’m the descendent of an evil nightmare dragon? Awesome!” Malca exclaimed.

“But that means your mudery father might come and kidnap you, so not awesome,” Birch worried, wringing his claws.

“Oh, shush, if I got kidnapped by Mr. murdery there wouldn't be anything you could do about it.” Malca replied, nudging his tail affectionately.

“I would never let you get kidnapped.” Birch declared passionately.

“Good thing we found you before Morgoth did.” I said.

“Why are you with a life dragon?” Lilly said, gesturing towards Birch.

“He’s my best friend, and also, he woke up screaming when he saw me with black scales. Almost woke up the life dragon camp.” Malca explained, twining her tail with Birch’s. I could see from the way Birch looked at her that he liked her much more than a friend.

“Anywho, can we come with you on your awesome butt-whooping adventure? Please say yes!!!” Malca said, hoping excitedly from one foot to the other.

“Wait, who said I wanted to go?” Birch asked, startled.

“You could always just stay here.” Malca reminded him.

“I guess I’ll go, if you promise not to hurt yourself by being a scale-brained idiot,” he replied.

“Sure you can come! Besides, we need a life dragon scale. We’ll just pry it off him.” Lyla said, responding to Malcas first question.

“Wait, what? Who's getting their scales pried off?” Birch asked worriedly.

“Great! Let's go!” Malca cried, taking off into the woods.

“You don’t even know where we’re going!” Sam called after her.

Soon we were heading up a steep hill, where the cockatrice resided. “Soo, how do you know where the cockatrice is?” Malca asked curiously.

“They poison the land that's around them, an experienced hunter like me can smell them a mile away.” Sam said proudly.

“What is a cockatrice anyway?” Birch asked.

“Scary death chicken thing.” I replied.

“That can turn you to stone if you look at it, so be careful.
